Case Study: UW Minicourses

Client

The Memorial Union at UW-Madison offers a wide range of summer minicourses from Artistry to Yoga. The Union wanted a web-based version of their course catalog with an e-commerce component.

Challenge

Design a storefront for customers with different needs. Create a navigation model that allowed prospective students to search for a specific course or by a course category. Link the Union's in-house MS Access database to the on-line course catalog and allow students to register and pay on line.

Solution

The new site ( http://www.wisc.edu/minicourses/ ) would have a course catalog plus the ability to sign up for a course and to accept payment electronically. DoIT already has the infrastructure in place to accept credit card payments over the web and have an organization's internal account credited. The original database was migrated from MS Access to Oracle so that the on-line store could communicate with our e-commerce infrastructure. The Union now has a rock-solid, database-driven site that can be administered from web screens (the bottom image shows how to modify a class which is immediately displayed in the roster, middle screen).
