UW-designed technology played a significant role in Madison Metro’s 2012 Outstanding Public Transportation System Achievement Award. Recognized as the best transit system of its size in North America, Madison Metro recently cited their use of smart phone technology, which includes Mobile UW, as a reason for their recent success.
UW Communications and DoIT staff were instrumental in building Mobile UW and a bus app that lets users access real time bus locations, search for bus stops, view scheduled departure times for specific stops, and browse by route and stop numbers.
“Madison Metro’s willingness to make its route data open to the community allowed our engineers the freedom to create a service that helps make transportation easier for the UW community and Madison residents,” said Brad Leege, a senior software engineer at DoIT and co-designer of Mobile UW.
Metro was recognized by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and will be presented with the award in October at APTA’s annual membership meeting in Seattle, Washington.
