Do you have a question about Software Training for Students? If so, the answer to your question is waiting in the list of Frequently Asked Questions below.
What is Software Training for Students
Software Training for Students offers free computer training to registered UW-Madison students. Classes vary from basic desktop applications to advanced Web design. STS strives to offer training that is linked to degree-credit course work or future job placement and helps students stay current with software updates. STS is funded through the Student Information Technology Initiative fee, a portion of student tuition.
I am not a student, but I am a UW faculty member, visiting scholar or staff member. Can I attend STS classes?
No. Because STS funding comes from the student tuition, our classes are only available to registered UW-Madison students. However, we are able to accommodate special requests, such as customized student trainings in your class, for faculty who are using technology in their courses.
How do I register for an STS class?
The first step in registering for an STS class is to create a My Software Training login and password. This can be done by clicking on the Create New STS Account button found on the STS home page. After creating an account and logging in, you can click on either the Classes or Calendar link on the right side to view a listing of STS courses. After finding a course you would like to attend, click on the Enroll link to register.
If I create a My Software Training account, will STS share my information or spam my e-mail account?
No. Student information is collected for the sole purpose of verifying that you are indeed a registered UW-Madison student and eligible for our services. Student information is protected and is not shared with anyone. You can select whether or not you would like to receive a weekly e-mail update of STS classes but we respect your online privacy and give you the choice to decide whether or not you would like to receive these e-mails.
What is My Software Training?
My Software Training is an online registration system. It allows students to drop STS classes, download the manuals and files used in class and view classes you are currently enrolled in or have previously attended.
Why do I need an STS account?
Previously, you were required to enter in all of your personal information every time you enrolled in a class. It quickly became tedious and many students stopped filling out the enrollment forms completely, or made mistakes while retyping the information over and over again. By using an STS account, you can simply select the classes you would like to enroll in and your enrollment information is generated automatically, saving you time and finger-strain.
Do I need to register?
No. While registration is not required, it is highly encouraged in order to guarantee a seat in a specific class.
How come my seat was given away to another student even though I was registered?
Registered students must be present at least 10 minutes prior to the start of class in order accommodate those on the waiting list. Registration is therefore only valid until 10 minutes prior to the start of class. After that time, a registered student's seat will be given to walk-ins and waiting list students so that class may start in a timely manner.
Should I come to class if I'm on the waiting list?
While your seat is not guaranteed, it is still very likely that you will get a seat in the class if you come early. We find that typically several students who register do not actually attend, leaving room for those who are on the waiting list. Ten minutes prior to the start of class, the unclaimed seats are given to students on the waiting list on a first come first serve basis. Students on the waiting list will not receive a seat in the class if ALL of the registered students attend or if other students on the waiting list arrived earlier.
Will I get an e-mail to notify me if I am off of the waiting list?
Yes.
I can no longer attend a class that I am registered for. What do I do?
All you need to do is to withdraw from the class at least two hours before the class begins. To withdraw from the class, simply log in to My Software Training, find the class you would like to drop in the Current Enrollment section, and click on the Drop button beneath the class.
Can I drop a class right before the class starts?
No. You must drop the class at least 2 hours before the start of class.
My name was removed from all registration lists. Why was this done?
Students with three or more no shows (after registering online) will lose their registration privilege. When students register, but do not show up or cancel, they prevent other students from registering for the class.
I would like to learn how to create a web site, where do I begin?
A great place to start to learn about web site creation is our Dreamweaver 1 and HTML 1 classes. You can attend these classes in either order but both are recommended.
How can I find out the list of classes I signed up for?
You are able to view all of the classes you are currently enrolled in from the Current Enrollment page in My Software Training.
Can you accommodate someone with a disability or special need?
We are able to accommodate most needs, provided we are informed at least 48 hours in advance. Please contact us at sts@doit.wisc.edu so that we can provide any assistance you might need.
Do I need to bring anything with me to class?
Yes. Bring your current, valid student ID. You may also want to bring notepaper for taking notes. You may also consider printing out a copy of the course manual and bringing it with you so that you may make notes directly in the manual. The manuals we use in class may be downloaded by logging into www.wisc.edu/sts and clicking on the Manuals/Class Files link.
Why do I have to share a computer during some classes?
Occasionally our classes will fill beyond the number of available computers. In order to serve as many students as possible we may ask that you pair up with another individual on one computer.
How can I offer future class suggestions?
At the end of each class students are asked to fill out an evaluation sheet. We carefully consider all suggestions and comments on these evaluations. In addition, you may email sts@doit.wisc.edu with suggestions for future classes.
I would like one-on-one training. Is this available?
STS's limited resources do not permit us to offer one-on-one training. The most efficient and cost-effective way to spend student dollars is through our instructor-led classroom training and online classes.
I would like to bring my mother, brother, partner, neighbor, etc. to class with me. Can I do that?
No. STS funding comes from the Student Information Technology Initiative fee, which is part of student tuition. Our classes are only available to registered students at UW-Madison. Non-students may not attend our training sessions.
Where can I get the training materials used in classes?
To download the manual and sample files for a particular class, simply log in to My Software Training, find and click on the class you would like the materials for in the Class Listing. There will be up to two buttons on the class page, one for the manual and one for the file. If one or more of the buttons are not present, that means that the material is not yet available, online.
I would like to use the training materials from STS training classes at the company where I am interning. Can I do that?
No. All of the materials used in our training sessions are copyrighted. Use is restricted to UW-Madison students for educational purposes only. These materials may not be used outside of the Software Training for Students Program.
I still have a question that isn't answered by any of the above questions. How can I get help?
