Project

Home Health Online Training

Customer Need

Develop an online-learning solution to replace an introductory portion of face-to-face learning for home health agency staff and surveyors.

Description

A necessary component of DQA's training of agency surveyors is familiarity with legislation pertaining to the quality of such home health agencies. As a consequence of the abundant amount of legislation, part of the concern for PTE in development of this training solution was to encourage the user's retention of the material by incorporating interactivity into the site.

Included among the aids to memory for the user are thought-provoking ideas and questions for individual pieces of legislation covered, practical scenarios demonstrating the relevance of such legislation, and question-response pairs for application and review of the material learned. Finally, interactive quizzes provide further occasion to solidify the material presented just previously. This combination of instructional methods is used for each of the subgroups of legislation in order to encourage repeated engagement with the material for the purpose of retention.

The navigational design of the site begins at a high level, with the various types of surveys that the user will encounter. Within each survey is an overview of its significance, followed by individual areas of legislation which contain each of the components described above, and finally a quiz for overall review of the material covered. Resulting from this course design is a more modularized, and therefore more manageable, learning solution that provides a foundation for subsequent in-depth face-to-face discussions. The toolbox to deliver this included: XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Photoshop, and Flash.

Here was our customer's response in a follow-up to the project:

"I’ve had 2 Home Health Employee Education (the old NEO) classes since the implementation of the online course. Completion of the online course is a pre-requisite to classroom time. The January class agenda was reduced by 8 hours and in reality could have been reduced by 10 hours. I also reduced the March class agenda by 8 hours because I think it is better to end early than tell the students they have to stay 2 hours longer! But, again, we saved another 2 hours. The next agenda will be cut the additional 2 hours.

"So, the online course saved 10 hours of face to face classroom time without compromising the learner's outcome. This means a savings of at least one overnight and associated expenses per student per class session. The students also gave very positive feedback on the online course. They really liked the interactivity of it and the case study.

"Working with you two was great and I sure hope we can work together again sometime in the future."
