Corded Desktop Telephones

UW Madison Division of Information Technology (DoIT) tests telephone equipment for compatibility with the Centrex System and campus wiring. The following telecommunications equipment has been tested and is recommended for purchase and use on the Madison campus.

Ordering information

DoIT does not sell telephones. Telephones need to be ordered from an outside vendor through your department's purchasing staff. For your convenience, we have listed some vendors below. You may want to contact these vendors or others for price comparisons, as you are not restricted from purchasing products from other vendors.

Office Depot is the prime vendor for office supplies, including telephones, for the University. Some telephones and accessories on the recommended list are not available from Office Depot. Below are vendors that might carry those items. To order from Office Depot, contact your department's purchasing office.

***Telephones with known compatibility issues***

Aastra/Northern Telecom 8000 series - the message waiting lights on these phones will not work with the campus voice mail system. Purchase the Astra/Northern Telecom 9000 series if you are looking for a telephone with a message waiting light.

AT&T 954 4-line Intercom Speakerphone - users of these telephones on campus have experienced multiple problems including calls being cut off and unreliable line indication lights.

IBM 4-line Intercom (models IBM-4900, IBM-412CID, IBM-412) - tests conducted by DoIT on the IBM-412CID and IBM-412 revealed unreliable line indication lights.

Note: When sharing telephone lines, it's best to use the same telephone equipment products. Mixing vendor equipment may result in unreliable indication lights and other problems.
