Streaming Media
Streaming media technology enables you to include audio, video and other multimedia
files into your web site, enriching the experience for your visitors and allowing
you to convey information in a more meaningful and engaging manner. Visitors
to your site will be able to listen to or view media files while live events
are happening and/or in an archived format after an event has taken place.
The media files are specially formatted and placed on a streaming server managed
by DoIT. When a user clicks on a media link on a web page, the contents of the
media file begin to flow across the Internet in a gradual and continuous stream
from the streaming server to the user’s browser (i.e., the “stream”
in streaming media). After about a 5 to 10 second delay, audio and video files
begin to play either in a pop up window or embedded into the web page. Users
can pause, rewind and fast-forward media clips using a VCR type control panel.
The source material for streams can be either prerecorded material or live
video presentations (from historical reenactments to lab demonstrations to distinguished
speakers), providing a gold mine of teaching aids for instructors and valuable
archival records for event planners. And since users don’t actually “download”
the files--they simply see or hear them as they are streamed--you can maintain
stronger controls over copyrighted material.
