IT Policy and Planning Department
The IT Policy and Planning Department provides services for departments at UW-Madison in the areas of Information Technology (IT) related policy, compliance, contracting and intellectual property. Our past clients include: the Medical School , Business Services, Academic Technology, Registrar's Office, Archives and Records Management Services (ARMS), and the Office of Financial Aid. Assessments and Surveys
We prepare or assist with electronic surveys, self-assessments or other technical documents that are needed by decision-makers in evaluating the need for policy, procedure and contract development to support their business needs.
Compliance and Regulatory Monitoring
We keep abreast of national and state legislative, regulatory and policy-making bodies that affect higher education. We help monitor regulatory compliance of organizations and systems.
Contract Development
We develop contracts, especially those without a university purchasing element. These contracts can include inter-institutional collaborative agreements, acceptance of grants, and non-disclosure agreements. We ensure that signatures are obtained appropriately.
Contract Negotiation
We work with the department, University Legal Services and the contracting party’s lawyers to ensure that the university’s needs are met.
Intellectual Property Management
We manage DoIT’s intellectual property including license agreements, open source licenses, non-disclosure agreements and trademark/patent registration.
Legal Consulting
We work with Legal Services to obtain legal consultations on a wide variety of IT-related topics, such as contracts, license agreements, trademarks and open records.
Policy Communications
We document and publish issues or outcomes through presentations, open meetings, email, web pages and other means. This can include assisting the client in organizing the forum or content.
Policy Development
We do end-to-end policy development from concept through maintenance.We help bring policies to the appropriate governing bodies such as the Information Technology Committee (ITC) for approval.
Policy Frameworks
Several policies are often related to each other. We create and maintain frameworks for IT relatedpolicy. A policy framework might include adaptation of a national standard, a “roadmap,” or policy outlines and templates.
Policy Representation
We represent DoIT on task forces and committees that are working with IT related policies and procedures.
Technical Research
We conduct technical research and analytical studies to assist decision-makers with policy issues and initiatives.
