Streaming media expands the boundaries of your project

Friday, February 17, 2006

If your department could reach 500 or even 2,500 more people with its research findings, classroom material or conference content, would you do it? Using streaming media technology, you can do just that.

Streaming media enables users to include audio, video and other multimedia files into their web site, enriching the experience for their visitors and allowing them to convey information in a more meaningful and engaging manner. Visitors to the site will be able to listen to or view media files as live events are happening and/or in an archived format after an event has taken place. Think of it as making an event “streaming room only.”

The DoIT Streaming Media Services team has worked with a wide array of campus groups to stream content. In October, they hosted a live stream of Bill Gates’ campus presentation. (Visit Gates News for more information, including access to the video.)

DoIT streaming media options include:

Live Event. Stream a live event across campus or across the world. Use single or multiple camera angles or audio from more than one speaker.

Video. Save a live event for future reference or convert existing video libraries to streamable media and make it available to your audience online.

Illustrated Audio. This technique creates higher quality images of the PowerPoint slides and synchronizes them with recorded audio.

Audio Only. Publish audio-only versions of any live event such as music performances.

If you think you may be interested in having your event or research project captured through streaming media, contact DoIT Streaming Media Services for a free consultation at streaming@lists.wisc.edu or visit their Web site at DoIT Streaming Media (click on Streaming Showcase) to see other examples of their work on campus.
