Symposium to address integrating math and the biological sciences
Tuesday, October 13, 2009
The Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery and the UW Graduate School are sponsoring the Second Annual MathBio Symposium to explore the interfaces that connect the mathematical, computational and biological sciences. The event is scheduled for November 19-20 and will be held at the Fluno Center. Registration deadline is October 30.
Titled MathBio 2: IMAGE, the 2009 symposium will focus on the mathematical, computational and perceptual challenges and opportunities in the exploding field of biological imaging. Presenters will highlight the growing need for interdisciplinary collaborative efforts to more effectively understand, analyze, visualize and disseminate biological image data sets. The multidisciplinary nature of image analysis, particularly the science of perception and visualization, will be discussed in partnership with faculty from diverse areas across campus.
The MathBio Symposium addresses research, an important initiative in UW-Madison's IT Strategic Plan, which focuses on how technology-based services can support our campus mission and the priorities of colleges and departments. Since early 2007, the Office of the CIO has partnered with the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, the Libraries, the Graduate School, the Laboratory for Optical and Computational Instrumentation (LOCI), DoIT and others to provide educational events that facilitate interactions among research and scientific staff and provide outreach services. Through this campuswide effort, the CIO office has helped to facilitate jointly sponsored events, such as the symposium, and to offer outreach services to researchers.
