Sanitize - help prevent spread of colds and flu
Friday, September 18, 2009The following strategy for helping prevent the spread of colds and flu is being implemented for all multi-user computers supplied through DoIT for the InfoLabs, campus computer Kiosks and our loaner laptop program. Some of these solutions might work for your own labs and personal computers.
In the campus InfoLabs and at the Kiosks we will be deploying sanitizing liquid dispensers available for users and we will post signs on or near the dispensers encouraging use by patrons before and after using a lab/kiosk. In addition, in the labs and at the kiosks, support staff will clean keyboards with sanitizing wipes as frequently as possible and practical. We have chosen this option over the ultraviolet sanitizers mentioned below because the keyboards just plain get dirty from use, so wiping them will serve the dual purpose of sanitation and cleaning. However, sanitizing "wands" might be a good solution in other venues.
Regarding Laptops for Loan, we have added a step to our check-in process at all locations which includes wiping the entire laptop (except the screen) and bag handles with a sanitizing wipe. Screen cleaning wipes will be used on the screens.
There are also some sanitizing products that use Ultraviolet C (UVC) light to sanitize surfaces such as keyboards as they are more difficult to clean with a wipe. UVC lights would also likely reach down the sides of the keys. These lights do need to be used properly, held close to the surface and moved slowly. Don't expose to close contact with eyes or skin. They are also fairly expensive. See http://www.verilux.com/learn-more/healthy-cleaning for information on Verilux sanitizing products, including safety precautions.
