Through September 25: Recycle your old computer at DoIT

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Old computers and peripherals can be hazardous to everyone's health. The toxic or hazardous materials they contain - such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, and more - can spread if the components are discarded in a landfill.

Now, you can do something to prevent environmental damage from these materials. Through September 25, just bring your old equipment (any brand) to DoIT for recycling:

When: Through September 25, 2009, 7:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.
Where: DoIT Help Desk's Walk-In Service Desk in the Computer Science building at 1210 West Dayton St.

DoIT will only accept personally owned computer components (including computers, monitors, CD drives, and hard drives) for recycling. You must present a valid UW ID. (For information on proper disposal of UW-owned equipment, see SWAP.)

Although we make sure that hard drives are removed and reduced to confetti-size pieces, you should still delete sensitive information, back up necessary files, and remove all transportable media from your computer before you drop it off.

Parking near DoIT is limited to three 20-minute spaces available on North Charter Street, just across the train tracks from DoIT. See Parking for Tech Store Customers for more information.

This recycling effort is sponsored by DoIT and Apple Inc. to keep old computer parts out of the waste stream and have them recycled properly and securely in the United States.
