Take advantage of technology this fall: Some reminders
Friday, September 18, 2009
Instructors preparing for Fall semester should consider technology as they plan for teaching. Here’s a list of just some of the things to consider.
My UW-Madison
Find many of the resources you will need to start your course in the Academics Tab in the My UW-Madison Web portal. For a description of available services, see academictech.doit.wisc.edu/ideas/academics-tab
NetID and security
If this is your first semester at the University, make sure you have activated your NetID and learned about the various University technology resources and security policies.
Schedule and location
In the Academics tab of the My UW portal, you can find your class schedule and locations. Check the academic calendar for holidays. Enter your office hours using the tab, so students can meet with you.
When you are ready to meet with students, use the Teaching Resources module on the Academics tab to display your office hours, so your students will see them in their Course Resources module of the portal.
Course roster
Check your course roster for a list of enrolled students. It’s in the Faculty Center, under the Academics tab of My UW.
Books
Enter textbook materials, special instructions and Web site addresses into the Faculty Center under My UW’s Academics tab. This information is available to students through Class Search and Student Center, and bookstores will be able to retrieve your textbook information.
Library reserves
You can place materials in the online reserves at UW-Madison Libraries for easy access by your students. These materials can include books, textbooks, articles, videos, solution sets, and exams. Instructors can also work with a librarian to select and deliver course-related resources in addition to the materials on reserve.
You can see eReserve links in the Teaching Resources and Course Resources modules under the Academics tab of My UW and in your Learn@UW course space. For help, contact your library liaison.
Deliver course resources online with Learn@UW
Learn@UW is an online course management system that allows you to easily create a course Web site for posting course materials, holding online discussions, collecting homework, giving quizzes, and managing and posting student grades. Delivering those online resources can help you and your students.
Starting to use Learn@UW is simple. Just follow the online checklist.
To learn more about Learn@UW, view the online tutorial, attend a Learn@UW training session, or stop by the Digital Media Center at 425 Henry Mall for a one-on-one consultation.
Links to other online course resources can also be added to the Academics tab of the My UW-Madison portal, and Learn@UW links will show up in Teaching Resources and Course Resources under the Academics tab of the MyUW portal.
Contacting students
Set up an email classlist to easily contact your students.
