21st Century Network project reaches milestone

Friday, March 06, 2009

The new campus network—the 21st Century Network—now has almost 90,000 managed ports. The new network project was launched several years ago to better meet the needs of the campus community. The previous system was comprised of loosely affiliated and self-managed networks throughout campus. The upgrade created a uniform structure that is cooperatively managed and centrally designed. It also allows campus to gain access to a world-class network, both wired and wireless.

The rollout focused on one building at a time, requiring extensive renovations and upgrades to many of the units’ heating, air conditioning, power, fiber and physical security systems. Installation, patching and configuration of the new network components took place after the renovations were completed.

This diagram illustrates the project’s roll-out progress. "Managed ports" refers to the ports DoIT staff and trained campus LAN administrators can access through the Authorized Agent Network Tool Suite (AANTS) tool suite. Since December 2003, 89,187 ports have been added.

The following groups and companies developed and launched the network: Facilities, Planning & Management (FP&M); Information Technology Committee (ITC); Network Advisory Group (NAG); Inacom Information Systems; Cisco Systems, Inc. and Division of Information Technology (DoIT). Authorized agents, who provided operational support within their departments, played an integral role in supporting the network.
