Wireless
Background
Campus wireless consists of a campuswide Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) and associated wireless access points. The VLAN connects to the campus network through a firewall. Users must be authenticated before they can pass traffic between the VLAN and the campus network. Once authenticated, users may operate for four hours. Then, they must authenticate again to use the network for another four hours.
Wireless:
- uses the network name uwnet-[building name] (all in lower case).
- is open to any student, staff, or faculty member listed in the campus directory. The directory is the sole authentication database.
- is a public service that is part of the 21st Century Network build-out.
- includes a DHCP server to provide dynamic configuration.
- buildings with wireless service should be clearly marked with the poster found on the right of the wireless page. List of service locations. Map.
Campus wireless policies
The frequency ranges is used for the wireless network are a shared resource. Use of the frequencies for departmental purposes, for example, might preclude wireless service.
DoIT provides a database to register this information or to search for other nearby uses. Providers of wireless ethernet access points are encouraged to register. Details on how to register Campus frequency ranges.
Some sort of access control is strongly encouraged for all wireless networks. MAC layer filtering or a firewall interface to the campus network seem to be the choices.
