Connecting solutions for workgroups
DoIT offers a variety of remote connection methods for workgroups and departments including a LAN-to-LAN VPN and a Dedicated Circuits service.
LAN-to-LAN VPN
If your workgroup is located off-campus, you will often find networking easier using a LAN-to-LAN VPN – it will make your network appear to be on campus (with a campus IP address). This service covers all devices on your LAN - you will not need to install VPN clients on each individual computer. There is no DoIT charge for access provided the customer’s connection rate is less than 1MB. You are responsible for circuit costs, DoIT approved equipment, DoIT setup/installation and SmartNet maintenance on equipment. DoIT support for these connections is during normal business hours (8-5).
To set up a LAN-to-LAN VPN, open a case with the UW Help Desk at http://helpdesk.doit.wisc.edu/page.php?id=9, and ask for “Network Services Work Request for a LAN-to-LAN VPN”.
Dedicated Circuits
If you need large amounts of guaranteed bandwidth, or need 24x7 support, you should consider upgrading to a dedicated circuit. This is typically needed by when maintaining a web site or file server with high bandwidth demands or high reliability needs at your off-campus site.
Departments looking for 24X7 support must upgrade to a dedicated T1 circuit (minimum).
DoIT will charge usage fees for dedicated circuits. These fees cover field services support and Internet transit. Fees are based on the UW’s cost for Internet traffic and field services support.
As university and affiliated staff at off-campus locations are not assessed the campus network fee, departments are responsible for circuit charges (contracted directly with commercial provider), DoIT recommended equipment with vendor maintenance at their site, and port/setup charges (time and materials) for connecting to the campus network. Expectations for remote customers and DoIT in the implementation and management of dedicated circuits is outlined here.
Port/setup fees vary based on the type of connection. All dedicated circuits (DS3, 10Mb Ethernet, etc.) are charged based on usage, not to exceed 30% of the circuit capacity. T1 customers are charged a flat 30% of the capacity.
To set up a dedicated circuit, open a case with the UW Help Desk at http://helpdesk.doit.wisc.edu/page.php?id=9, and ask for “Network Services Work Request - Dedicated Circuit”.
Custom solutions
If you have units with multiple workgroups at a single off-campus site, DoIT may be able to manage your connection via a custom contract arrangement. For example, we have consolidated the networking needs of the many different groups at UW Research Park into a single group for network management purposes. We would own the equipment to the network MDF (i.e, your connection between the outside and your internal LANs) and negotiate the other costs of the service.
If you believe your needs fall into the custom category, contact the director of UW Network Services, Perry Brunelli (brunelli@doit.wisc.edu).
