Network Services
DoIT is responsible for the management, operation and support of the campus network and coordinates the design, long-range planning and procurement of a broad range of network services. Aspects of the network include the campus network (fiber optic backbone, wireless and dial-in). DoIT also provides support to other Wisconsin educational and public service organizations through WiscNet.
Campus Network
Infrastructure
The Campus Network consists of high-speed connectivity to a fully redundant Ethernet backbone. The backbone spans three supernodes, 12 nodes and approximately 180 radial buildings. Communication speeds are 10 Gbps between supernodes and a minimum of 1 Gbps between nodes, radials and telecommunication rooms. Read about the current upgrade.

ResNet, Residence Halls Network
ResNet provides an Ethernet network connection to students living in University residence halls. ResNet services are covered by student fees.
Wireless
UW students, faculty and staff can also connect to the Internet in more than 15 public locations with a fast and convenient wireless locations. In areas serviced by this wireless service, users only need a laptop, a wireless network card and a campus account to get on the campus network to check email, seek information on the Web or obtain academic course content.
Internet2 high speed network
Internet2 is a high-speed network used exclusively by universities, government agencies, and select private partners and dedicated to developing and testing advanced Internet technologies. UW is one of more than 170 universities participating in the Internet2 effort.

WiscNet, Network service provider for Wisconsin
WiscNet provides network services to Wisconsin public and private colleges, tech schools, and K-12 schools that enroll more than a half-million students. WiscNet’s services include Internet access, Web content filtering, virtual Web site hosting, email, and technical support and consultation.
