Mass Email - Address Issues
Faculty/staff
According to University Legal Services, faculty and staff cannot
withhold their campus email address, because it is deemed to be public
information.
Why should faculty and staff have an email address on file?
If your office mail shelf is half empty but your email inbox is
overflowing, you're part of a growing trend on campus. Many campus
departments are now reaching out electronically to the University
community in addition to using traditional mail. Email distribution
of important University information is rapidly increasing, so it's
more important than ever for faculty and staff to have an accurate
email address on file with the campus.
How do you receive a Campus Business Email Address or Choose a "preferred" email address on file with the Human Resources System?
UW-Madison faculty and staff email addresses are maintained by the Human Resources System. If your email address is incorrect in the Human Resources System, it is incorrect on all official campus listings, and you should update it.
DoIT uses the email address on file with the Human Resources System to provide the campus mass email service. Human Resources System maintains the data; but each employee is responsible for placing his or her email address on file, correcting it if necessary, and updating it if it changes.

Students
All university correspondence is sent to the @wisc.edu email account that is established when you become a student.
As a student, you have the right under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 to request that the University withhold your address information from anyone outside the University. You can also prevent your email address being released to any third-party (credit card companies, etc.).
However, you will continue to receive mass emails that are pertinent to your education. If you have questions about your privacy, please contact the Registrar's Office.
