License Agreements

UPDATE: Nov. 2003 - Microsoft License Contract updates

Refunds
DoIT will be issuing refunds to departments that purchased Software Assurance (SA) through the Tech Store for the Microsoft Servers and CALs that were ultimately funded centrally by the campus.

We will also be providing refunds for Windows 2003 Standard and Enterprise Server licenses purchased from DoIT after June 2003, as we were able to get them licensed under our System-wide Back Office Server Allocation.

Office 2003 for Windows
Microsoft Office 2003 new licenses are now available. Media will be available for customers with valid licenses the first week of December from the Tech Store ($15 for single copies, $25 for 5-packs). We will be sending an email to those folks who ordered SA for Office, informing them that the new media is available for purchase at the Tech Store.

Microsoft has discontinued the OfficePro/FrontPage bundle. New licenses are available for each product separately. Microsoft is honoring SA purchases made for the bundle, so customers that purchased SA for the bundle are entitled to the current versions of both products.

Microsoft has also changed the type of media required for work at home rights. Work at home users are now required to use Office Registration Wizard (ORW) media (the same media required for students) to install the software on their personally owned machines. We are working on making ORW media available for purchase by faculty and staff.

We realize the requirement for ORW media adds cost and complexity for those desiring to install Office for working at home, and we are aggressively lobbying Microsoft to change their stance on the matter. But the fact remains that Microsoft's product use rights now require ORW for work at home installations, and, although we are still discussing the issue with Microsoft, we are also obligated to make sure that you understand the product use rights. We recommend waiting to install Office 2003 for work at home use until we can get this issue resolved.

Servers and Licensing Confirmation
We are developing a license confirmation process for all the Microsoft Select products. It will cover all prior license purchases made through DoIT, and any new license purchases made through DoIT during the life of the contract. Buyers will receive an email with confirmation of the desktop, server, and SA licenses they own by the middle of December.

We are also developing a web site to help manage the centrally funded Server Software Assurance licenses. Our primary communication will be directly with the contact persons listed from both the purchase histories and the server registration surveys compiled over the last several months.

As new products ship from Microsoft, we will use these two resources to contact eligible users. We have already informed eligible Exchange users of their right to upgrade to Exchange 2003 and Windows Server users of their right to upgrade to Windows Server 2003.

Enhancements to Software Assurance
Departments that purchased SA for Office are eligible for eLearning tools. It's our understanding that the eLearning tools for Office 2003 will be released by Microsoft in the first quarter of next year, and we hope to make these available to you when they are released. We do not have any further details at this time.

The campus is eligible to receive problem resolution support for Servers as a result of our Server SA purchases. We are not sure how we can best leverage that support but we hope to let you know at the same time we roll out the web site for managing the Server SA licenses.
