Shared Hosting Service
Selecting a URL
When you apply for a web account, you will select the URL to use for your site (example: yoursite.wisc.edu), where "yoursite"
is a unique name and usually an abbreviation of your Department, Institution, etc. New ___.wisc.edu domains are subject to the Campus Hostmaster for approval.
If you already have a site and would like to switch it over to the Shared Hosting service, we can easily transfer your current URL along with the existing site.
Additional URL's:
There is not a set-up fee for your primary production and test domains. Also additional URLs
are available for a one-time setup fee of $100, and the customer designates what portion of the overall account quota the new site should contain. These additional or secondary domain totals are capped for each account at:
- Two extra for Bronze Level Accounts
- Five extra for Silver Level Accounts
- Eight extra for Gold and Platinum level accounts.
Web accounts that require more domains than their current service level allows would either move up a service level or obtain a second web account with the Shared Hosting Service.
Other Domains:
- .org Allowed when the scope of the website's mission includes and exceeds the mission of the UW-Madison.
- .net These requests are handled on a case-by-case basis.
- .com Groups requesting *.coms need approval from Legal Services alternatively, those groups may look into getting a commercial ISP.
