Shared Hosting Service

Policies & Eligibility

Who is eligible for this service?

The service is available to UW-Madison Schools, Colleges, academic departments, institutes, centers, projects, and individual academic courses.
  • This service is not available to students, faculty, or staff for personal use. Please see: My WebSpace a web accessible file storage system offered by DoIT to UW Madison students, faculty and staff.
  • This service is not recommended for sites that cannot accommodate infrequent, scheduled maintenance outages or sites that require a highly customized hosting environment (e.g. specialized software installation, server restarts to pick up configuration changes).

    The shared hosting environment is robust enough to support many of UW-Madison's most high profile web sites. In some cases, however, a dedicated server hosted on the DoIT Platform may be more appropriate.

Web Hosting Terms of Service

Responsible Use | Platforms | Service Levels | Support | Web Applications | Backups | Billing | Cancellation

Responsible Use Policy:

Regulations that govern personal conduct and the use of University facilities also apply to the use of Internet resources. Customer use of the web hosting service must be consistent with the University's mission and with its role as a public agency. Each member of the University community is expected to protect the integrity of these resources and to know and adhere to the UW-Madison Responsible Use of Information Technology Policy.

Platforms:

This service provides a production and test hosting environments for the Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP, Windows/IIS/ASP/.NET and Java/WebLogic/Tomcat platforms.

Service Levels:

There are four service levels with the major distinctions being quota (size of web site) and scripting privileges (asp.net, php, restricted data)

BronzeBronze = Static content only (no PHP/ASP/.Net support)
SilverSilver = PHP/ASP/.Net supported
GoldGold = PHP/ASP/.Net/ supported
Platinum Platinum = Required for Java applications and those handling restricted data

A web account is defined as a folder on either platform with a quota assigned to it. As an example; a department needing both Linux/Apache and Windows/IIS technologies would require two web accounts. Additionally the monthly fee for service level billing on an account can not be segregated to different funding sources. If needing separate billing for multiple web sites they would be considered distinct web accounts.
Each web account gets 2 domains: 1 domain is earmarked as a "test" domain and is ideal for developing/testing content before release. The other domain is the customer's Production domain; customers should only advertise their Production domain and reserve the test domain for development and testing. NOTE: Java customers have development, test, QA (quality assurance) and production environments.

Accounts requiring multiple web sites as part of one account can do so - Please see our additional URL's page for more information.

Support Policy:

Business hours support for the web hosting service is primarily handled via email to webhosting@doit.wisc.edu. We will make every effort to respond to questions within 24 hours.

Outside of business hours, site support is on a best effort basis and can be initiated at the DoIT Help Desk http://helpdesk.wisc.edu.

Also see our Database Support Policy.

Web Application Development:

Shared Hosting's responsibility for application development is limited to setting server configurations to allow application development to proceed, as long as these settings do not compromise server integrity or affect other hosting customers. The application owner is responsible for all other aspects of application development, including coding, testing and troubleshooting.

Customers interested in partnering with a DoIT developer can contact us at webhosting@doit.wisc.edu with a detailed description of the assistance needed, including preferred development language and environment, if known (e.g. ASP.NET, PHP, Java Weblogic/Tomcat, open source). We will put the customer in touch with the most appropriate development group for their needs.

Contact DoIT's Software And Load Testing (SALT) service for assistance with functional, regression and load testing of web-based applications.

Backups:

The web hosting service utilizes DoIT's Bucky Backup service to protect data and recover it if needed. We maintain the last two versions of a particular file no older than sixty days.

Billing:

Charges are billed monthly (or annually per customer request).

Monthly Fee: BronzeBronze = $20 SilverSilver = $45 GoldGold = $90 PlatinumPlatinum = $150

Cancellation:

The customer can contact us at any time to cancel service and billing on an account. The procedure for canceling service varies depending on whether the web site is being closed down or migrated to another service. See our Cancellation page for detailed instructions.
