Faculty and Instructor Resources

DoIT Academic Technology
DoIT’s Academic Technology department is dedicated to helping faculty and instructional staff maximize their effectiveness through the use of technology. They offer an array of innovative technology tools and instructional support services, described below, designed to address today’s teaching challenges and provide a continuum of services, from simple troubleshooting to designing complex online courses. Best of all, many of these services are free!

Course Management System: Learn@UW
Nearly half of all faculty and instructors on campus use Learn@UW, the UW’s course management system, to provide course materials to their students. Learn@UW lets instructors create course web sites where they can post syllabi, conduct quizzes, offer practice exams, submit grades and deliver a range of course content.

Workshops and Training
Throughout the year, Academic Technology offers free, short workshops and training series around a variety of topics, including integrating audio and video into instruction, web development, using Learn@UW, and using presentation technologies.

Grants and Awards (Engage)
Engage is a grants and awards program that provides resources to instructors to create new technologies for teaching and learning and also helps them adapt previously created tools (e.g., podcasting, student response systems, QuizImage) into their own courses. Engage support also includes one-on-one consultation and technical assistance.

E-learning Materials Development
Academic Technology also assists instructors in incorporating digital and streaming media, webcasting or PowerPoint web lectures into their course sites. The department also develops course or staff/department web sites, virtual labs, simulations and instructional games.

My UW-Madison: Instructor/Advisor View
My UW-Madison provides instructors and advisors a suite of integrated information personalized to their roles and interests, including a list of advisees, class rosters, grades and other teaching resources.

Class Lists
Classlist is an automated no-charge system that allows faculty and teaching assistants to have email distribution lists generated based upon their course enrollment.

Advisees Lists
AdvisorLists gives advisors access to many of their advisees’ academic attributes (e.g., major, GPA, email address, expected graduation date) which can be used to create pre-defined email lists tailored to advisors’ communications needs

In-class Software Training for Students
The Software Training for Students program will provide free student training directly in classrooms for instructors who require their students to use software (e.g., Excel, Dreamweaver, Word) for course work.

Course Packets
DoIT Digital Publishing & Printing Services (DP&PS) works with faculty and instructors to create course packets (e.g., articles, diagrams, photos, reference materials) for their students. In addition to the producing and distributing of course packets, DP&PS will produce and distribute packets, and obtain any necessary copyright clearance.

Streaming Media
Streaming media technology enables you to include audio, video and other multimedia files on your web site. DoIT has the infrastructure, bandwidth and expertise to create a high-quality streaming media experience for your project and its viewers.

Community of Educational Technology Support (ComETS)
ComETS is a UW-Madison technology support community of those who are involved with teaching and learning with technology in any way (e.g., instructional designers, multimedia experts, IT administrators).
