Computing Essentials for Departments
Web Resources
Computing technology is always changing. Hardware becomes obsolete as soon as it's off the shelf, how systems talk to one another (i.e., IT architecture) is increasingly complex, and the sheer volume of data seems to grow exponentially. DoIT is here to help departments navigate these issues and make good choices about when and how they make technology investments. In many cases, DoIT can administer key aspects of a department's IT environment, allowing the department to focus on what it does best!
Campus Network
The campus's new 21st Century Network is more secure from attacks, equipped to deliver data, video, voice and other services, and capable of evolving to meet changing research and academic needs. Eighty-seven percent of campus departments are in a collaborative network management arrangement with DoIT in which a local Authorized Agent manages specific network functions, and DoIT provides support and backup.
Accessibility
Whether you are a web master, an instructor with a course on the web, or a department administrator, DoIT has the instructional resources to make your web site accessible. We can teach how to make your own site changes or you can hire one of our staff to review and fix your site.
Application Development
If you’re thinking about purchasing a new application, DoIT can assist you in making a sound choice, whether it be identifying system requirements, reviewing bid responses, installing the system or converting old data. Our developers can also create new web applications, implement e-commerce systems, and develop web-based forms that make your business processes much more efficient.
Web and Server Hosting
DoIT can provide a secure, reliable, climate-controlled environment for running your applications and storing critical data and information. Our hosting services include database and web hosting, servers, output management and printing.
Software and Load Testing (SALT)
In general, the cost of fixing a problem in production is approximately four times the cost of fixing it in a testing cycle. To address this need, DoIT offers a service to aid in functional, regression and load testing of web-based applications. SALT services are available to anyone who is testing UW-Madison applications or UW-System applications that are hosted and managed at UW-Madison. www.doit.wisc.edu/applications/salt/
Data Management
The University Data Warehouse is a collection of data that is extracted or derived from University information systems (e.g., student administration, financial, research, human resources). InfoAccess allows departments and users to access and query the data in order to solve problems, write grants and make decisions in a timely fashion.
