Computing Essentials for Departments
Administrative Tools and Services
Email (WiscMail Plus)
WiscMail Plus is designed for departments as a convenient alternative to running their own email systems. WiscMail Plus accounts (user, role-based and alias) receive basic WiscMail features, but extends them to give departmental administrators the authority to create, manage, and administer accounts in their domain.
Calendaring (WiscCal Plus)
Nearly half the campus is already using WiscCal, the calendar system that enables users to connect directly to the work schedules of nearly 70,000 people at UW-Madison. WiscCal Plus lets administrators manage resources (e.g., conference rooms) and create role-based accounts. The service can help departments reduce costs, and local technical support and low-cost training are available.
Voice Services
Departments can purchase a full range of phone services, including local and long distance service, cell and land lines, voice mail, caller ID, paging and calling cards, through DoIT Voice Services. Many time-saving features such as Enabled Voice Mail, which delivers voice messages as audio files via email to a desktop computer, are free of charge to users of the Centrex campus phone system.
Digital Publishing and Printing Services (DPPS)
DPPS services departmental printing needs. DPPS produces a wide variety of brochures, forms, posters, tickets, letterheads, newsletters, business cards and even custom textbooks and course packets. In addition, DPPS provides services for locating and creating accessible audio and text documents.
Web File Storage
My WebSpace Group Directories are available for use by departments as an easy way to share and collaborate on files among staff and colleagues. For a small fee, a Group Directory comes with 1 GB of storage that is separate from the free My WebSpace accounts. My WebSpace Commons is an opt-in feature created for individuals and departments that have created content within their My WebSpace account that they wish to have appear in Internet search engine listings.
Mass Email and Email Lists
The Mass Email service enables departments to distribute University-related email to student and/or faculty/staff audiences. Each emailing receives prior approval from the designated campus data custodian. WiscList is a free self-service system that allows faculty, staff and students to create and maintain their own email distribution lists.
Guest NetID
Departments can provide a temporary NetID to visiting scholars, prospective students, seminar attendees, contract employees and others who need short-term access to the campus network.
Discounted Software and Hardware
Staff and faculty can obtain significantly discounted software through the Wisconsin Integrated Software Catalog, and departments represent half of all purchases made at the DoIT Tech Store.
Web Surveys
WebSurvey@UW creates and deploys online surveys from anywhere on the web. Its user-friendly interface allows users to customize templates, pose questions in dozens of formats, track responses, send follow-ups and generate reports. Departments can use it to evaluate programs or identify student trends.
Media Services
Would you like to produce a promotional or educational video for your project? Want to create a podcast, voiceover or add music to a flash presentation? Need help polishing up your PowerPoint slides so they're suitable for a national audience? DoIT can provide these and other media services on a fee basis.
My UW-Madison
Does your department have an online campus resource that is frequently accessed by students, faculty or staff? The My UW-Madison service team can discuss with you the possibility of integrating that resource into the campus portal so that it is more accessible and personalized to your user community.
Data Back-up
Bucky Backup offers an inexpensive and convenient way to protect your data and recover it if needed. Bucky Backup is available for individual workstations and for local area networks. It is high-quality, industrial-strength insurance against the loss of your irreplaceable data.
Online Training
In addition to providing class-based technology training, DoIT’s Professional Technical Education program designs online courses and tutorials for departments. Departments that are changing an important business process, have repetitive training needs, or have staff in multiple locations may find customized online training a cost-saving solution.
