Changes to campus NetID login and log out

Starting August 21, everyone who uses NetID-based applications will notice new web pages for login and log out. Pages associated with NetID have been simplified and standardized. This is true for larger applications, such as WiscMail and My WebSpace, as well as for department applications. Some are already using Shibboleth for authentication; all will notice the new pages after this migration occurs.

Here are two things worth noting with the switch.

Single Sign Out
This act of forcing log out on all campus applications when user logs out of NetID Login has never been possible under Pubcookie, the previous authentication method. This was true despite various attempts with some applications such as WiscMail, WiscCal and MyWebSpace. Single sign out will still not be possible with Shibboleth.

Browsers that restore session cookies
Some browsers will restore session cookies after being restarted. As a result of the changed behavior of log out (cited above) it is worth noting that some browsers (FireFox and Chrome) allow the user to access the previous session state prior to the user restarting the browser. This means that people who use shared computers may risk unauthorized access to their campus services.

The campus is still encouraged to “log out and close/quit” their browser when they finish using campus NetID applications. Your department may also want to revisit how you will clear session cookies on shared machines. The following two documents are helpful:
