DoIT CASI
2004-2005 CASI Annual Report
Wondering What CASI is?
The academic staff of each school, college, or division establishes a Committee on Academic Staff Issues (CASI), which advises the dean or director on the formulation and review, and represents the development, of all policies and procedures concerning academic staff members of the school, college or division, including personnel matters. School, college or division policies and procedures comply with UW-Madison Academic Staff Policies and Procedures (ASPP) and other campus policies and procedures governing academic staff.
The DoIT CASI was established in January 2000 to advise the CIO on matters concerning academic staff members. The Committee on Academic Staff Issues, a governance committee resulting from legislation from the Academic Staff Assembly is required to be established by all schools/colleges/divisions on campus. We are a group of five people who are committed to representing the best interests of the Academic Staff at DoIT. The CASI representatives meet on a monthly basis to discuss issues of concern to Academic Staff. Visit DoIT’s official CASI web site at: http://www.doit.wisc.edu/casi

Elaine Holub fulfilled a vacant term last year and was elected to her first full term this year. We thank them for their work in the past year. Carrie Regenstein our deputy CIO, was an ex offico member of CASI and representing the CIO Office, has made a strong contribution to the CASI providing advice and feedback as we reviewed and recommended policies that affect academic staff. Performance Review Light
- A Performance Review Subcommittee of CASI presented recommendations to CASI and the CIO’s office regarding an every-other-year “Performance Review Light” performance review option to replace the longer annual version every other year if the staff member and supervisor both are in agreement to use it. The CIO’s Office accepted this with some modifications. and the “Light” version was used by several work groups this spring. It has received good reviews, and we will follow up with a survey to those who used it to further improve it. CASI worked with DoIT’s Management Team to keep them informed about the refinement of the Performance Review process.
- Additionally, based on recommendations of the Performance Review Subcommittee, the CIO’s response, and staff feedback, CASI held a brownbag on Performance Evaluations in December 2004 and a “Performance Evaluation Awareness Session" in January 2005 to kick off the process for this review period.
- CASI continues to work to better define the Performance Review Light particularly for the supervisors.
Your Benefits
ECBS Knowing Your Benefits
- Based on feedback from staff, CASI sponsored a benefits program with Employee Compensation and Benefits Services (ECBS) called “What You Don’t Know CAN Hurt You – Knowing Your Benefits!” Roy Dorman from ECBS did a wonderful job presenting three sessions that were both well attended!
“How to”: Grant Submissions for Professional Development
- PDRC-“When should you apply for a grant?” This session outlined tips on applying for these grants. The presenters were successful PDRC grant recipients Alice Anderson and Carole Turner, and PDRC committee member, Lisa Jansen.
CASI is Listening!
- DoIT’s CASI created a Web Survey to determine informational session’s important to academic staff. We analyzed the data and are currently using that information to plan our upcoming programming and communications to academic staff. Our intention is to highlight existing programs, and create new ones only where needed.
Streaming Video of the Chancellor’s State of the University address to ASEC
- On November 8 th, 2004 Chancellor John Wiley presented his annual “State of the University” address to the Academic Staff Assembly. CASI worked with DoIT technicians to present a streaming video presentation of the event as it happened. The presentation was viewed by DoIT employees on their individual workstations, as well as in a group in room 3139ABC. An invitation was also extended to other campus CASI’s and they also participated.
Promotion of Campus STAFF Resources
- CASI promoted several workshops and resources that could be potentially useful to staff. CASI encouraged staff to pursue the new My Professional Development web site; a comprehensive posting of courses and other activities for working professionals at UW-Madison. CASI also promoted several grant workshops hosted by the Professional Development & Recognition Committee.
- CASI suggested to the CIO office that they would invite the Provost, whom our CIO reports to, join us at an all staff meeting. The initiation was extended by the CIO's Office and Provost Peter Spear gave brief comments and responded to questions from our staff at an All Staff meeting.
Academic Staff Assembly
- Al Krug continues as our Assembly representative for District 451and Maddy Covelli has been appointed as our Assembly representative for District 452. We know Maddy and Al will be excellent representatives at the Assembly.
