WiscCal

Share Your Calendar

The Share URL feature of WiscCal enables users to easily share their WiscCal calendar (including resource calendars) with those who do not use an online calendar or with users of other popular calendaring systems, including Google Calendar, Mozilla Sunbird, Apple iCal or Windows Vista Calendar, which read WiscCal calendar data using iCalendar format, the Internet standard for calendar data exchange. This means, for example, that parents who are Google Calendar users can configure their calendar to read the Share URL provided by their student in order to have access to his or her WiscCal calendar.

It works by generating a unique "Share URL" that displays WiscCal calendar data as a simple web page (sample). Share URL also gives users direct access their calendar data, which opens the door to a wider set of options for viewing and presenting calendar data, including:

  • Using non-WiscCal clients (e.g., Windows Vista, Apple iCal, Mozilla Sunbird, PDAs or an iPhone) to view data from a WiscCal calendar;
  • Automatically generating a URL that can be shared with others, who can paste it into their browsers to view your calendar data as a simple Web page;
  • Integrating with other online calendaring applications, such as Google Calendar;
  • Incorporating a WiscCal calendar into a Web site (e.g., a daily conference room schedule) that can be viewed as HTML output or fed through RSS.

The Share feature is viewable as a link in the WiscCal module in the My UW-Madison portal, or you can visit tools.wisccal.wisc.edu to access the WiscCal sharing tools directly. For more information, see How to Share Your Calendar or visit the Help Desk.

Please Note: If there is ANY sensitive data (e.g., personal, financial, medical information) in a WiscCal calendar, users should not share their calendars using this feature. For example, if you post your Share URL on another public Web site, anyone who stumbles across it will be able to use it to read all appointments, daily notes, and day events in your WiscCal account regardless of the access level you set when you created the event. If someone else has invited you to a confidential meeting, that meeting will appear in your agenda and be viewable using this Share URL.

Enhancements:

  • Resource shares can now be created
  • A resource share form that uses easily bookmark-able URLs
  • A resource lookup form that has an "auto-complete" option
  • An HTML view for Shared Calendars that now shows Daily Notes and Day Events in chronological order with Appointments
  • A new iCalendar compatibility option for calendar clients that have trouble with Recurring Appointments (e.g., Apple iCal, Mozilla Sunbird/Lightning)
