WiscCal

PDA/SmartPhone/Wireless Device Syncing

The WiscCal service currently supports two types of syncing software/technology: There are several advantages to using OMA-DS/SyncML, rather than Oracle Calendar Sync, for syncing data to a pda:
  • Installation is quick and requires neither media or desktop computer as long as you have internet access via your cell provider or wireless ethernet and configuration takes but a minute.
  • Since the syncing is between the sync client on your pda and our sync server, you can sync from home as well as work or while traveling as long as you have internet access, via either your cell provider or wireless ethernet; you are not tied to a local desktop computer.
  • There are no index files to corrupt as the synchronization server stores all required data to make it available from any location.
  • There are syncing clients for PalmOS, PocketPC (a WindowsMobile client is in beta release), and many phone devices from Nokia and Sony Erickson come with sync clients pre-installed.
Users simply connect to the Internet to synchronize with corporate networks, enabling greater efficiency with anywhere, anytime access to information that is always up-to-date. Users no longer require conduits from PDAs to PCs, and maintain the flexibility to choose the OMA-DS-compliant device that best suits their needs, with the assurance that they will not lose any synchronization functionality. For calendar users, Oracle Mobile Data Sync is a complete solution, offering full two-way synchronization of events, tasks and contacts, including meeting recurrence rules and respect of meeting ownership.

Although they both use the same synchronization engine, OMA-DS via Oracle Mobile Data Sync and Oracle Calendar Sync differ in their transportability. Oracle Calendar Sync requires a physical connection from the cradle to your corporate network, while OMA-DS via Oracle Mobile Data Sync has no dependency on wired connections or corporate networks. Oracle Calendar Sync desktop PDA software replaces your device's sync conduits, allowing you to synchronize your PDA with the Calendar server through a physical connection to a LAN or VPN network. OMA-DS via Oracle Mobile Data Sync synchronizes over any HTTP connection, removing dependency on physical connections and allowing full synchronization wherever an HTTP connection is available — whether physical or wireless. If you are a very mobile worker and would benefit from anywhere, anytime synchronization, OMA-DS via Oracle Mobile Data Sync may be your preferred option.

The only present disadvantage is that the PalmOS/PocketPC/WindowsMobile clients cost $25 while the Oracle Calendar Sync application is free notwithstanding its limitations.

Syncing your device via Oracle Calendar Syncing Software

Oracle PDA Syncing Software from Oracle is now available for free via the links below!

This software will allow you to sync between your PDA and your WiscCal calendar.

This software connects your PDA directly to your WiscCal account and does not need to have the WiscCal Oracle Native Client software.

NOTE: The first time you perform a sync, all WiscCal calendar objects will be placed on your PDA and all your calendar PDA objects will be placed within your WiscCal calendar!

Syncing your device via OMA-DS - Oracle Mobile Data Sync (formerly know as SyncML) Software

What is OMA-DS?
OMA-DS (formerly known as SyncML) is the standard protocol for synchronizing devices and applications over the Internet. It enables users to synchronize calendar information between OMA-DS-enabled mobile devices and the Calendar server, using Oracle Mobile Data Sync. Users connect their devices to Oracle Mobile Data Sync using any standard Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) connection. This can be done with a device cradle or by using wireless technologies such as GPRS, EDGE, Bluetooth and WiFi, depending on the device. The first data types supported for remote synchronization were calendar, task and contact data, but SyncML will soon support the synchronization of files, e-mail and other enterprise data.

OMA-DS (SyncML) Clients

There are multiple clients available which provide the syncing software needed to sync your pda calendar with your WiscCal calendar. Your device may already have a SyncML application installed on it. Try configuring this client with the WiscCal Service. Otherwise, you will need to install the appropriate Synthesis SyncML client, available from http://www.synthesis.ch/. You can use a 30-day trial version to test the software, and later purchase a permanent license of Synthesis SyncML Client Standard.

Configure your OMA-DS (SyncML) Client

Before you can sync your data, you must first configure your client to connect to our WiscCal servers. Please use the client documentation.

Important: some devices have special considerations. View the specific device considerations page for further details.

  • NOTE: The only requirement for OMA-DS / SyncML functionality is that your mobile device has a working internet connection.
