Bucky Backup Service-Level Agreement
Statement of Intent
This defines the levels of service that DoIT Customer Application Services provides to Bucky Backup customers. It describes backup, archive, and restore services based on customer requirements. It also describes the mission and responsibilities of the Bucky Backup Administration group, the services offered by DoIT Customer Application Services, and the responsibilities of the Bucky Backup customer and the customer’s system administrator.
Mission and responsibilities of Bucky Backup Administration
- The Bucky Backup Administration group provides customers with high-quality management of their data. Bucky Backup Administration will back up or archive files according to the Service Option requested by the customer.
- Bucky Backup Administration will monitor activity logs to determine if a customer’s files were not backed up or if the customer’s workstation was powered down. Bucky Backup Administration will attempt to correct the failure and will notify the customer’s system administrator if a failure has occurred.
- Bucky Backup Administration is responsible for acquiring and managing storage resources and resolving any problems affecting quality service.
- Bucky Backup Administration will tabulate bills and issue them monthly.
Responsibilities of the Customer and Customer’s System Administrator
The Customer and the Customer’s System Administrator are responsible for:
- forecasting space requirements accurately and in a timely manner and promptly alerting Bucky Backup Administration of any needed service improvements
- responding to email notification from Bucky Backup Administration that a backup has failed by reviewing error logs and reporting failures that require correction by Bucky Backup Administration
- performing routine restores of data files and directories (system recovery services are available from DoIT Repair and Desktop Support)
- selecting a Bucky Backup Service Option.
- Customer must specify Customer Service Options desired. Campus users whose backup needs are not met by the Service Options listed should contact DoIT to establish their own management classes.
Available Service Options for file backup
Backup provides recoverability of a directory or file system as of the last backup. The Customer desiring backup services should select a Bucky Backup Service Option. (The term "Service Option" is equivalent to terms used in IBM literature, such as "domain" and "management class." Customers familiar with those terms should know that DoIT has adopted the use of Service Options to make Bucky Backup easier to use and to minimize the need for individual users to modify ".opt" files and master other technical aspects of the IBM product that underlies Bucky Backup.)
Backup Service Option A is:
- Backups take place nightly (Monday through Friday) for files that have changed since they were last backed up.
- Three (3) backup versions of a file will be kept in data storage when the file exists on the client workstation.
- If the file no longer exists on the client workstation, one (1) backup version will be maintained in data storage for 180 days.
Backup Service Option B is:
- Backups will take place weekly (once per week) for files that have changed since they were last backed up.
- Three (3) backup versions of a file will be kept in data storage when the file exists on the client workstation.
- If the file no longer exists on the client workstation, one (1) backup version will be maintained in data storage for 180 days.
Backup Service Option C is:
- Backups will take place nightly (Monday through Friday) for files that have changed since they were last backed up.
- Five (5) backup versions of a file will be kept in data storage when the file exists on the client workstation.
- If the file no longer exists on the client workstation, one (1) backup version will be maintained in data storage for 365 days.
Backup Service Option D is:
- Backups will take place weekly (once per week) for files that have changed since they were last backed up.
- Five (5) backup versions of a file will be kept in data storage when the file exists on the client workstation.
- If the file no longer exists on the client workstation, one (1) backup version will be maintained in data storage for 365 days.
Custom Service Options are also available. Campus users whose backup needs are not met by the Service Options listed above should contact DoIT by sending email to sysops@doit.wisc.edu, to establish their own management classes. For more information on management classes and data retention options offered with Bucky Backup, see http://www.doit.wisc.edu/backup/ on the Web.
Available service for archive
The Bucky Backup archive service enables customers to make point-in-time copies of data, such as one file, a set of files, a single directory, or a set of directories, at various time intervals. The archive service is:
- A file can be archived, whether or not it has been modified, as long as the file is not in use during the archive process.
- When a file is archived, the archived copy is retained for 365 days.
Custom archive service is also available. Campus users whose archive needs are not met by the service described above should contact DoIT by sending email to sysops@doit.wisc.edu, to establish their own management classes.
