Bucky Backup

Upgrading to TSM v5.3

This document assumes the following:

  1. You are running a supported version of Windows (2000, XP or 2003).
  2. You currently have a version of TSM installed on your system, version 4.x or newer.  If not, please use the Installing TSM v5.3 guide.
  3. You’ve skimmed through this README file.
  4. Your system has the latest service pack available for your operating system installed & either Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6.0 SP1.  If you are unsure of this, please ask your local Network Administrator or IT person.
  5. You have at least 100 Megs free on your hard disk.
  6. Your network card driver’s parameters are manually set to the proper speed & duplex.  “Auto-negotiate” will work too, but you may experience poor backup performance.  All network card drivers are different.  Please refer to your driver’s documentation for information on how to manually specify proper speed & duplex.
  7. You have the time to read through this entire guide and do all of the steps.  Please note that proper Bucky Backup installation does not end when you hit the Finish button on the installer.

Installation Instructions:

  1. Log onto your machine as Administrator or as someone with administrative privileges.
  2. Go to Start -> Run.
    or

  3. Type cmd and hit Enter.
  4. In the Command Prompt window that appears, type net stop "TSM Scheduler" and hit Enter.

  5. Leave the Command Prompt window open.
  6. Download the TSM v5.3 software installer for Windows 2000/XP/2003.  It’s right here: TSM535C_X32.exe.  This is the software that your system uses to communicate with the Bucky Backup server.
  7. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.  This will extract all the needed installation files to a temporary directory.  You can just accept the default location of C:\tsm_images.

  8. After all files are extracted, you will be prompted for a language to run the installer in.  English is the only supported language.

  9. Go through the installer, accepting all default configurations.

  10. (Optional) When it’s finished, delete the folder C:\tsm_images & the file TSM535C_X32.exe.
  11. In the Command Prompt window, type net start "TSM Scheduler" and hit Enter.

If the service will not start back up, please see this Helpdesk document.
  12. Open the file \Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\dsmsched.log in your favorite text editor.  Look at the bottom of the file for information like this:

The important thing to look at is the “Server Window Start” information.  This tells you when your next scheduled backup is supposed to take place.  If things don’t look right, please call the Helpdesk at 264-HELP (264-4357).
  13. Make sure you leave your computer turned on and the scheduler running during the time that you backups are scheduled to occur.
  14. It is recommended that you read through the Tips for Windows section now.
