Bucky Backup
Upgrading to TSM v5.2
This document assumes the following:
- You currently have a version of ADSM or TSM installed on your
system. If not, please use the Installing TSM v5.2
guide.
- You’ve skimmed through this README
file.
- Your system has the latest service pack available
for your operating system installed & either Internet Explorer 5.5
or 6.0 SP1. If you are unsure of this, please ask your local
Network Administrator or IT person.
- You have at least 100 Megs free on your hard
disk.
- Your network card driver’s parameters are manually
set to the proper speed & duplex. “Auto-negotiate” will work too, but
you may experience poor backup performance. All network card drivers are
different. Please refer to your driver’s documentation for information
on how to manually specify proper speed & duplex.
- You have the time to read through this entire
guide and do all of the steps. Please note that proper Bucky Backup installation
does not end when you hit the Finish button on the installer.
Installation Instructions:
- Log onto your machine as Administrator or as someone with administrative
privileges.
- Completely uninstall any existing ADSM and
TSM software using the instructions below.
Check your Start menu to determine what is installed.
If you have a Programs group called “IBM
ADSM”, follow these directions:
- Go to Start -> Run. Type cmd and hit enter.
- Enter the drive letter containing your “Program Files”
folder followed by a colon and hit enter. (ex. d:
followed by the enter key.)
- Type cd \progra~1\ibm\adsm\baclient and hit enter.
- Type dsmcutil list and hit enter to list all of the
installed ADSM services. You should have “ADSM Client
Acceptor”, “ADSM Remote Client Agent”, and
some sort of “scheduler”. We’re going to
manually remove each of them since the uninstaller in step
IX doesn’t.
- For each ADSM service listed in the previous step, type
dsmcutil remove /name:”Service Name” and
hit enter, where “Service Name” is one
of the services listed in the previous step. (ex. dsmcutil
remove /name:”ADSM Client Acceptor” followed
by the enter key.)
- Type dsmcutil list and hit enter to verify that
all ADSM services have been removed. If some are still listed,
go back to the previous step. Make sure you are using the
forward slash (the one on the question mark key) before name
and that you are typing the service names exactly as they
appear in the list.
- (Optional) Type dsmcutil showpw /node:node_name (where
node_name is replaced with your actual node’s
name) to display your node’s password that is stored
in your system’s registry. Make a note of it.
- Type exit and hit enter to close this command window.
- Go to Start -> Programs -> IBM ADSM -> Uninstall
ADSM Components.
- Click once on the first thing in the list (probably “ADSM
Administrative Client” or “ADSM API’s”),
hold down one of the Shift keys on the keyboard, then click
once on the last thing in the list (probably “HTML Books”).
All the list items should be highlighted now. Make sure there
is a check mark in “Disable Prompting”. Hit the
Remove button and wait for the Close button to become active.
The ADSM components will be removed from the list one by one
during this process. When the Close button becomes active,
all components should be removed from the list. If not, try
this process again.
- Hit OK on the dialog that comes up, then reboot your computer.
- Log back on as Administrator or as someone with administrative
privileges.
- If you’ve performed any customizations to your dsm.opt
file that you wish to retain, or you wish to keep your dsmsched.log
and/or dsmerror.log files, copy them out of \Program Files\IBM\ADSM\baclient
to a temporary location. If somebody else originally installed
this Bucky Backup software for you, you may want to ask that
person about this step.
- Double-click on “My Computer”, then on the
drive containing your “Program Files” folder,
then on “Program Files”, then on “IBM”.
- If “ADSM” is the only folder here, back up
to the “Program Files” folder and delete the entire
“IBM” folder. If there are more items in here
other than “ADSM”, just delete the “ADSM”
folder.
- (Windows 2000/XP) Go to Start -> Programs and right-click
on “IBM ADSM”. Select “Delete”.
- (Windows NT) Go to Start -> Find -> Files or Folders.
For “Named”, type “IBM ADSM” (including
the quotes). When found, right-click on that folder and select
“Delete”.
- Close all open windows and empty your trash. IBM ADSM is
now removed from your system.
If you have a Programs group called “Tivoli
TSM”, follow these directions:
- Go to Start -> Run. Type cmd and hit enter.
- Enter the drive letter containing your “Program Files”
folder followed by a colon and hit enter. (ex. d:
followed by the enter key.)
- Type cd \progra~1\tivoli\tsm\baclient and hit enter.
- Type dsmcutil list and hit enter to list all of the
installed TSM services. You should have some sort of “scheduler”
and possibly some others. We’re going to manually remove
each of them since the uninstaller in step X doesn’t.
- For each TSM service listed in the previous step, type dsmcutil
remove /name:”Service Name” and hit enter,
where “Service Name” is one of the services
listed in the previous step. (ex. dsmcutil remove /name:”TSM
Scheduler” followed by the enter key.)
- Type dsmcutil list and hit enter to verify that all
TSM services have been removed. If some are still listed,
go back to the previous step. Make sure you are using the
forward slash (the one on the question mark key) before name
and that you are typing the service names exactly as they
appear in the list.
- (Optional) Type dsmcutil showpw /node:node_name (where
node_name is replaced with your actual node’s
name) to display your node’s password that is stored
in your system’s registry. Make a note of it.
- Type exit and hit enter to close this command window.
- Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Double-click
on “Add/Remove Programs”.
- Select “Tivoli Storage Manager Client” and hit
the “Add/Remove” button (Windows NT) or the “Remove”
button (Windows 2000/XP).
- Hit Next on the first screen.
- Put a mark in “Remove”, then hit Next again.
- Hit the “Remove” button.
- If the uninstaller tells you that certain applications need
to be closed, please do so, then hit the “Retry”
button.
- Restart your computer when prompted.
- Log back on as Administrator or as someone with administrative
rights.
- If you’ve performed any customizations to your dsm.opt
file that you wish to retain, or you wish to keep your dsmsched.log
and/or dsmerror.log files, copy them out of \Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient
to a temporary location. If somebody else originally installed
this Bucky Backup software for you, you may want to ask that
person about this step.
- Double-click on “My Computer”, then on the
drive containing your “Program Files” folder,
then on “Tivoli”, then on “TSM”.
- If “TSM” is the only folder here, back up to
the “Program Files” folder and delete the entire
“Tivoli” folder. If there are more items in here
other than “TSM”, just delete the “TSM”
folder.
- Close all open windows and empty the trash. Tivoli TSM
is now removed from your system.
- Download the TSM v5.2 software installer for Windows 2000/XP/2003.
It’s right here: TSM524C_WIN32.exe.
This is the software that your system uses to communicate with
the Bucky Backup server.
- Double-click on the file you just downloaded. This will extract
all the needed installation files to a temporary directory. You
can just accept the default location of C:\tsm_images.
- After all files are extracted, you will be prompted for a language
to run the demo in. English is the only supported language.
- Go through the installer, accepting all default configurations.
- (Optional) When it’s finished, delete the folder C:\tsm_images
& the file IP22660.exe.
- If you’ve saved any files from your previous installation,
copy them into \Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient now. If one
of these files was a customized dsm.opt, skip down to step #13.
- Locate your registration response email from the DoIT Datacenter &
note the "Servername" line in there. Right-click on the corresponding
dsm.opt link below and select the option to save the file to your hard
disk. Save it in \Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient.
- Open the dsm.opt file you just saved in your favorite text editor
(such as Notepad). Delete the asterisk in front of the “NODENAME”
statement and change “your_node_name_here” to your
actual node’s name.
- (Optional) You are encouraged to read through the rest of the
dsm.opt file in order to make yourself more familiar with Bucky
Backup’s workings. Feel free to customize this file to
your liking. The necessary syntax for additional options can
be found in Start -> Programs -> Tivoli Storage Manager
-> Online Information.
- Save and close dsm.opt
- Start the “TSM Backup Client” by double-clicking
on the newly created icon on your desktop, or by going to Start
-> Programs -> Tivoli Storage Manager -> Backup Archive
GUI. If you get an error about an invalid entry in your dsm.opt
file (this might happen if you’ve saved your dsm.opt file
from your previous installation), hit OK, close out of the “Tivoli
Storage Manager”, open dsm.opt in your favorite text editor
and fix the offending line. The most common invalid entry will
be one called “books” as that statement was valid
in ADSM v3, but not in TSM v5.1. You should be able to fix most
invalid entries (including the “books” one) by commenting
the offending line out. To do this, just place an asterisk (*)
at the beginning of the line. When you are finished, save &
close dsm.opt, then restart “TSM Backup Client”.
- Enter your node name and password when prompted. This should
bring you to the main Backup Archive GUI screen where you can
select from “Backup”, “Restore”, “Archive”
& “Retrieve”. If you made it to this screen,
go onto the next step. If you encountered some kind of error,
please “OK” out of it, close the program, re-launch
it and retry your node name and password, making sure caps lock
is not on. If that doesn’t help, call the Helpdesk to report
the problem at 264-HELP (264-4357).
- Install the scheduler service. This is what facilitates the
backing up of your data during your scheduled backup time.
- From within the “Tivoli Storage Manager” window,
go to Utilities -> Setup Wizard.
- Make sure that only “Help me configure the TSM Client
Scheduler” is checked. Hit Next.
- Make sure there is a mark next to “Install a new or
additional scheduler”. Hit Next.
- Give it the name “TSM Scheduler”, install it on
your local machine, and make sure the “Client Acceptor
daemon (CAD)” check box is cleared. Hit Next.
- The option file should be “dsm.opt” and live within
the subdirectory called “baclient” where you installed
TSM. Browse to it if necessary and hit Next.
- Enter your Bucky Backup node name and password, then hit Next.
- Use the system account and have the service start automatically
when Windows boots. Hit Next.
- Specify schedule and error log file names. They should be
“dsmsched.log” and “dsmerror.log”, respectively.
If you want Bucky Backup events to be logged in the NT Event
log, check the box at the bottom. Hit Next.
- Hit Finish to install the new scheduler service. It will
probably take a minute or two. Be patient. You will get a
dialog box telling you it installed successfully when it finishes.
Hit OK on that, then exit the program.
- Open the file \Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\dsmsched.log
in your favorite text editor. Look at the bottom of the file
for information like this:
09/03/2002 15:12:32 --- SCHEDULEREC QUERY BEGIN
09/03/2002 15:12:32 --- SCHEDULEREC QUERY END
09/03/2002 15:12:32 Next operation scheduled:

09/03/2002 15:12:32
09/03/2003 15:12:32 Schedule will be refreshed in 4 hours.
The important thing to look at is the “Server Window Start” information.
This tells you when your next scheduled backup is supposed to take place.
If things don’t look right, please call the Helpdesk at 264-HELP (264-4357).
- Make sure you leave your computer turned on and the scheduler running
during the time that you backups are scheduled to occur.
- It is recommended that you read through the Preparing for Disaster
Recovery section now.
