Bucky Backup

Installing TSM v5.4

This document assumes the following:

  • You are running a supported version of Windows (2000, XP or 2003).
  • The node you are setting up is new and has no data on it.  If not, please check out this README file before going through this guide to read about the implications of upgrading your client software on your existing Bucky Backup data sets.
  • Even if your node is new, it still wouldn’t hurt to skim through this README file.
  • The system you are installing this software on has no previous TSM or ADSM software.  If it does, please use the Upgrading to TSM v5.4 guide.
  • Your system has the latest service pack available for your operating system installed & either Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 or 6.0 SP1.  If you are unsure of this, please ask your local Network Administrator or IT person.
  • You have at least 100 Megs free on your hard disk.
  • Your network card driver’s parameters are manually set to the proper speed & duplex.  “Auto-negotiate” will work too, but you may experience poor backup performance.  All network card drivers are different.  Please refer to your driver’s documentation for information on how to manually specify proper speed & duplex.
  • You have the time to read through this entire guide and do all of the steps.  Please note that proper Bucky Backup installation does not end when you hit the Finish button on the installer.

Installation Instructions:

  1. Log onto your machine as Administrator or as someone with administrative privileges.
  2. Sign up for Bucky Backup and register a node here if you haven’t already.
  3. Download the TSM v5.4 software installer for Windows 2000/XP/2003.  It’s right here: 5.4.2.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX32.exe.  This is the software that your system uses to communicate with the Bucky Backup server.
  4. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.  This will extract all the needed installation files to a temporary directory.  You can just accept the default location of C:\tsm_images.

  5. After all files are extracted, you will be prompted for a language to run the installer in.  English is the only supported language.

  6. Go through the installer, accepting all default configurations.

  7. (Optional) When it’s finished, delete the folder C:\tsm_images & the file 5.4.2.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX32.exe.
  8. Locate your registration response email from the DoIT Datacenter & note the "Servername" line in there. Right-click on the corresponding dsm.opt link below and select the option to save the file to your hard disk. Save it in \Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient.
  9. Open the dsm.opt file you just saved in your favorite text editor (such as Notepad).  Delete the asterisk in front of the “NODENAME” statement and change “your_node_name_here” to your actual node’s name.

  10. (Optional) You are encouraged to read through the rest of the dsm.opt file in order to make yourself more familiar with Bucky Backup’s workings.  Feel free to customize this file to your liking.  The necessary syntax for additional options can be found in Start -> Programs -> Tivoli Storage Manager -> Online Information.
  11. Save and close dsm.opt
  12. Start the “TSM Backup Client” by double-clicking on the newly created icon on your desktop, or by going to Start -> (All) Programs -> Tivoli Storage Manager -> Backup Archive GUI.
    or

  13. Enter your node name and password when prompted.  This should bring you to the main Backup Archive GUI screen where you can select from “Backup”, “Restore”, “Archive” & “Retrieve”.  If you made it to this screen, go onto the next step.  If you encountered some kind of error, please “OK” out of it, close the program, re-launch it and retry your node name and password, making sure caps lock is not on.  If that doesn’t help, call the Help Desk to report the problem at 264-HELP (264-4357).

  14. Install the scheduler service.  This is what facilitates the backing up of your data during your scheduled backup time.
    • From within the “Tivoli Storage Manager” window, go to Utilities -> Setup Wizard.

    • Make sure that only “Help me configure the TSM Client Scheduler” is checked.  Hit Next.

    • Make sure there is a mark next to “Install a new or additional scheduler”.  Hit Next.

    • Give it the name “TSM Scheduler”; install it on your local machine, and make sure the “Client Acceptor daemon (CAD)” check box is cleared.  Hit Next.

    • The option file should be “dsm.opt” and live within the subdirectory called “baclient” where you installed TSM.  Browse to it if necessary and hit Next.

    • Enter your Bucky Backup node name and password, then hit Next.

    • Use the system account and have the service start automatically when Windows boots.  Hit Next.

    • Specify schedule and error log file names.  They should be “dsmsched.log” and “dsmerror.log”, respectively.  If you want Bucky Backup events to be logged in the NT Event log, check the box at the bottom.  Hit Next.

    • Make sure “Yes” is marked for starting the new service upon completion of the wizard.

    • Hit Finish to install the new scheduler service.  It will probably take a minute or two.  Be patient.  You will get a dialog box telling you it installed successfully when it finishes.  Hit OK on that, then exit the program.

  15. Open the file \Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\dsmsched.log in your favorite text editor.  Look at the bottom of the file for information like this:

The important thing to look at is the “Server Window Start” information.  This tells you when your next scheduled backup is supposed to take place.  If things don’t look right, please call the Help Desk at 264-HELP (264-4357).
  16. Make sure you leave your computer turned on and the scheduler running during the time that you backups are scheduled to occur.
  17. It is recommended that you read through the Tips for Windows section now.
