Campus Media Captioning Solution — Pilot Project (Summer 2009)

The UW-Madison Accessibility/Usability Committee and campus multimedia groups have identified the need for a campus captioning solution that will provide a means for capturing, obtaining transcripts, captioning and publishing classroom lectures, public speeches, video and audio resources over the web, DVD, etc. Captions are text versions of the spoken word that allow the content of web audio and video to be accessible to those who do not have access to audio. Captioning is also helpful for other users, including people who may not be fluent in the language presented. The team has identified a captioning solution, Automatic Sync Technologies (AST), that is able to create media that is compliant with our campus Web Accessibility Policy. Below are the results from a pilot project testing the AST services. For more information, contact Alice Anderson of DoIT.

First time experience with AST...use of pilot account was a good experience for us to let us see how things are set up and working. Option to download needed files from AST web site was extremely helpful. Entire process was quick, intuitive, and easy. Beginner with AST, with basic knowledge of editing Mediasite presentations

Very positive. I used the AST help files for how to combine the caption files with the media files to make the captions visible to end-users. High – I am very experienced in captioning files.

I was very pleased with the turnaround time when I provided a transcript. The wait for getting a transcript was also not a problem. I have little captioning experience and read the manual for my DVD Studio Pro Software

Had a transcript – only needed caption file. We are in the process of developing a guide for using AST and steps for making captioned DVDs and web links with captioning I had limited experience using AST and preparing videos for DVD and Web distribution – I received help from School of Ed MERIT (media) staff

Automatic Sync was professional and a joy to work with. We worked with Kevin Erler directly to set up a workflow for eTEACH and they exceeded my expectations.

Transcript only - This is a capture of a 50 min lecture. The video is housed online but on a password protected site. Process was smooth. Took 5 days to receive transcript but once we got it, it was accurate and time stamped nicely. Very experienced. We wrote a system to merge the two. Real time captioning is a huge demand for SMPH. This company does not provide that.
