Workshops and Training

Academic Technology provides free training to faculty and staff who support the creation of instruction materials used in a UW-Madison timetable course.

How would I benefit from attending the Academic Technology Digital Storytelling workshop?

This workshop provides an opportunity for faculty to use technology and discover alternative approaches to teach course concepts, build authentic classroom communities, and assess student learning. Grounded in experiential and discovery-based learning, digital storytelling is an interdisciplinary multi-modal communication strategy. Participants will hear how digital storytelling is used across multiple disciplines and by diverse learner groups. By working together to apply new content delivery methods in an environment that fosters group inquiry and practice, faculty and researchers also have opportunities to learn new ways to talk about their work.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will have produced a 2 - 4 minute digital story, which could include recorded narration, supplemental music and visual images.

This workshop focuses on using story to:

    * Communicate course concepts or research findings
    * Build an authentic learning experience
    * Reach essential student learning outcomes
    * Give students the opportunity to reflect on their learning and creatively articulate their understanding of course concepts

Location:
Helen C. White Hall, 600 North Park Street, Computer and Media Center (CMC) Classroom, located in Room 2257

The workshop dates are:
June 4, 2009 10:00am - 12:00pm (Introduction)
June 16 2009 8:30am - 4:00pm
June 17 2009 8:30am - 4:00pm
June 18 2009 8:30am - 4:00pm

Participants in this workshop explore the use of digital storytelling as a method to reach essential learning outcomes. It is important that participants attend all scheduled sessions. With the guidance of professional digital storytellers and by producing your own digital story you will gain practical experience . The workshop includes guest speakers, including UW-Madison faculty who use this technique to engage their students, connect with students in a large lecture classroom, increase retention and measure learning outcomes. This workshop is restricted to UW- Madison faculty, instructional staff, or anyone supporting UW-Madison Timetable courses. Seating is limited to 10.
