DoIT Strategic Initiatives - The Big Ten
The following ten DoIT initiatives or sub-initiatives were selected from among the thirty-eight Campus IT Plan charters by the DoIT Leadership Team and the DoIT Management
Team based on several criteria: alignment with the Campus Strategic Framework, the Campus IT Strategic Plan and the Madison Undergraduate Initiative; impact on the campus
community (users and processes); added efficiency or functionality to the campus; and environmental energy (green) impact. These initiatives link back to the original charters

The numerical order below is for reference only.
Tier 1 Priority: Invest in “proof of concept”, prototypes or pilots; support current campus efforts.
- Data Center Services
Establish a set of core campus data center infrastructure services, standards, and methodologies and provide these resources to a broad range of campus entities at a competitive price (or free) commensurate with the hosting levels required. [aligns with IT Strategic Plan Charter 8.1]
- Mobile Computing
Develop an enterprise infrastructure service that supports and promotes the deployment of information and services on mobile devices for faculty, staff, students and visitors. In addition, develop applications, provide ready access to data, and create and support a campus community of developers. [aligns with IT Strategic Plan Charter 9.1 ]
- Identity and Access Management (IAM)
Define, develop and adopt a shared suite of IAM services to reduce duplication in our campus IT environment. [aligns with IT Strategic Plan Charter 8.2]
- Data Storage and Retrieval
Establish a suite of (uniformly available) core campus infrastructure services for storage, retrieval, backup, data mining and access. [aligns with IT Strategic Plan Charter 8.5]
- Campus Collaboration Tools
Define and implement a set of collaboration tools and services to address teaching, learning, research, outreach and campus services needs. [aligns with IT Strategic Plan Charter 9.2]
Tier 2 Priority: Consider pilot investments; support current campus efforts.
- Equip Classrooms and Learning Space
Identify and incorporate successful design strategies to equip classrooms and learning spaces for formal and informal learning. Accelerate the schedule for the redevelopment and design of classrooms and learning spaces. [aligns with IT Strategic Plan Charter 1.a1]
- Research support: Research Productivity Tools
Select and deploy research productivity tools to support collaborative research and research management across multiple units within the university, as well as across multiple institutions around the globe. [aligns with IT Strategic Plan Charter 6.4]
- Campus Administrative Systems
Develop the major administrative systems-human resources, payroll, student record, etc.-as part of enterprise infrastructure. [aligns with IT Strategic Plan Charter 9.4]
- Offer a Suite of Instructional Technologies eLearning Roadmap
Informed by research, surveys, broader campus initiatives, and the campus community, the Campus eLearning Roadmap Group will consider traditional and innovative teaching approaches to shared teaching and learning challenges and develop a suite of appropriate instructional technology solutions for campus. [aligns with IT Strategic Plan Charter 1.b3]
- Flexible Enterprise Services/Licensing
Develop a set of enterprise infrastructure services with the goal of reducing unnecessary duplication, lowering overall campus costs, improving service and establishing an infrastructure service portfolio that will be leveraged at the campus level. [aligns with IT Strategic Plan Charter 9.1 ]
