Faculty and Staff Computing Trends

Line graph showing trends (1998-2006) in how faculty and staff connect to the internet off campus. In 1998 the WiscWorld Dial-in Pool was by far the most widely used service at about 65%. The next most popular was Commercial ISP at about 15%. In 2006 the top response was 'Cable Modem' at about 55%, with WiscWorld coming in at number 2 with about 25%, almost tied with 'Wireless.'

The item showing the most change was cellular/mobile phone which went from about 45% in 2001 to about 75% in 2006. Desktop ownership is down a bit from 85% in 2001 to about 75% in 2006. Laptop ownership made a jump from 25% in 2001 to 40% in 2002, and has remained aproximately the same since then. Tablet PC ownership is up from less than 20% in 2003 (the first year it was measured) to almost 40% in 2006.

The years the survey took place were 1998, 1999 (figures from the UW Online Computing Surveys), 2001, and 2005 (figures from UW-Madison Architecture Surveys). Readership has decreased for each publication over the years (after most of them spiking in 1999 or 2001, except for the two student newspapers (Daily Cardinal and Badger Herald) which stayed relatively consistent at about 20% a piece, the BH a little higher. Wisconsin Week had the highest readership at about 60% in 2006, the Isthmus came in at about 50%, the Onion at about 30% and Comuting@UW 20%.

The choices for response: as often as it occurs, weekly, every other week, and monthly. By far, the most popular response is 'monthly' coming in at more than 30% in 2005 (down from previous years). The next highest response was 'as often as it occurs' with more than 15% in 2005 (down from 1998 and 1999, when it came in at more than 20%). 'Weekly' is next at less than 15% and 'every other week' has about 10%.
